Firework Safety During Fourth of July

California Firework Laws
The County of Los Angeles bans all fireworks in unincorporated Los Angeles County. Within each incorporated city laws and rules vary. Many cities, like Downey, allow for the limited use of “Safe and Sane” fireworks, while others, like the City of Los Angeles, have an outright ban on all fireworks. California divides fireworks into two categories. “Dangerous” fireworks are essentially any that go up in the air, explode, or move on the ground uncontrollably and are illegal without valid permits. “Safe and Sane” fireworks are anything else and must have the “State of California Fire Marshall Registered Firework” seal. Tips to Avoid Injuries During Fourth of July
The safest way to celebrate the Fourth of July is to leave it to the pros. (For a list of shows, see HERE.) If you want to indulge in your own fireworks, however, here are some safety tips:
- Check with authorities about your City’s laws and rules
- Light fireworks on even pavement away from anything flammable, including vegetation
- Only adults should light fireworks or closely supervise teenagers 16 and above
- Have buckets of water and hoses at the ready in case of a fire or an accident
- Never use glass bottles or cans to hold or support fireworks
- If a firework is a “dud” leave it alone for at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water
- Don’t carry any fireworks in your pocket
- Never horseplay or roughhouse around fireworks
- Wear safety eyewear and fire resistant clothing
