Questions About the Incident

What happened at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove?

On May 21, 2026, a cooling system failure at the GKN Aerospace facility on Western Avenue caused a storage tank containing approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to overheat and begin venting pressure. Because the tank’s valves were inoperable, crews could not drain or neutralize the chemical. The situation created the risk of a catastrophic explosion or large-scale chemical release, prompting a multi-day emergency response and mass evacuation.

What is methyl methacrylate (MMA)?

MMA is a flammable, volatile industrial chemical used to manufacture plastics, resins, and coatings, including components used in aerospace production. When a tank containing MMA overheats, it can undergo a runaway chemical reaction that rapidly increases pressure, creating a serious explosion and vapor release risk. MMA vapors are heavier than air, meaning they settle close to the ground and can accumulate in enclosed spaces, such as warehouses.

What caused the GKN tank to overheat?

Authorities confirmed that a cooling system designed to regulate the temperature of the chemical storage tanks at the facility had failed, causing the tank to overheat. The tank’s valves were also inoperable, preventing crews from draining or neutralizing the contents. Investigators, including the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, are reviewing whether safety protocol or regulatory violations contributed to the failure.

Was there a confirmed chemical release?

Yes. Officials confirmed that the tank vented and released MMA vapor during the incident. However, county health officials later stated that air monitoring conducted by the South Coast AQMD and EPA did not detect dangerous contamination levels in surrounding communities.

Even so, many residents reported strong chemical odors during the emergency, and ongoing legal and environmental investigations may reveal additional information about the extent of the release and any potential exposure risks.

Is the tank still dangerous?

As of May 27, there is no active leak, though officials cite a risk of another leak and a very small explosion concern. Response teams continue cooling operations and have constructed dykes and dams to prevent chemicals from reaching storm drains or the ocean. Monitor updates from the Orange County Fire Authority and City of Garden Grove emergency page for the latest status.

Health & MMA Exposure Questions

What are the symptoms of MMA exposure?

Short-term exposure to MMA vapor can cause:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Respiratory irritation
  • Coughing
  • Eye and throat irritation
  • Nausea

Skin contact can cause irritation. If you experienced any of these symptoms during or after the incident, even if you were outside the evacuation zone, seek a medical evaluation and document your condition. Medical records are important evidence in any future claim.

Are there long-term health effects from MMA exposure?

MMA is not currently classified as a known human carcinogen. However, repeated or prolonged exposure has been associated with chronic respiratory effects and irritation. The long-term health consequences of the levels of MMA exposure experienced during this incident are not yet fully known. This is an evolving area of the case, and ongoing medical monitoring may be warranted.

Should I see a doctor even if I feel fine?

Yes. Some effects of chemical exposure are not immediately apparent. Seeing a doctor creates a medical record that documents your condition at the time of the incident, which can be critical if symptoms develop later. It also demonstrates that you took the situation seriously, which matters in a legal claim.

My child’s school was closed because of the incident. Do I have a claim?

Possibly. Multiple schools in the Garden Grove, Magnolia, Savanna, Westminster, and Cypress school districts were closed as a result of the incident. If school closures caused you to miss work, arrange emergency childcare, or incur other expenses, those losses may be part of a claim even if you were not directly in the evacuation zone.

Evacuation & Practical Recovery Concerns

Was I in the evacuation zone?

The mandatory evacuation zone covered a nine-square-mile area across parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Stanton, Cypress, Westminster, and Buena Park, bounded by Ball Road to the north, Valley View Street to the west, Dale Street to the east, and Trask Avenue to the south.

Is it safe to return home?

Yes, the City of Garden Grove has confirmed that evacuation orders have been lifted for all residential areas. The remaining evacuees, approximately 16,000 residents who lived closest to the facility, were informed that it was safe to return home on May 26.

Will my homeowner’s or renter’s insurance cover my evacuation costs?

Possibly. Many policies include coverage for additional living expenses: hotel, meals, and transportation, when a covered event forces you from your home. Contact your insurer promptly and document all expenses. Regardless of what your insurance covers, you may also have a separate legal claim against GKN Aerospace for those same costs.

A representative from GKN Aerospace/their insurer contacted me. Should I talk to them? No. Do not speak with GKN’s representatives or their insurance adjusters. Anything you say can be used to minimize or deny your claim. Instead, contact The Dominguez Firm immediately at (800) 818-1818.

Can I file a legal claim against GKN Aerospace?

Depending on your situation, it may be possible. A class-action lawsuit has already been filed against GKN Aerospace on behalf of residents affected by the incident. The lawsuit alleges that GKN and other responsible parties failed to adequately protect the surrounding community from a known hazardous condition. The Dominguez Firm is actively investigating additional claims on behalf of evacuees, residents, workers, and businesses.

Do I need to have been physically injured to file a claim?

No. You may still have a valid claim even without a physical injury. Evacuation costs, lost wages, business losses, property damage, loss of use of your home, and emotional distress are all potentially compensable, independent of physical harm.

I live just outside the evacuation zone. Do I still have a case?

Possibly. Even if you were not under an official evacuation order, you may have a claim if the incident affected your health, property, business operations, or ability to safely access your home or workplace. Chemical odors, road closures, business disruption, and contamination concerns outside the formal boundary may all be relevant. A free consultation with The Dominguez Firm can help evaluate your specific situation.

Did GKN Aerospace have prior safety violations?

Yes. The South Coast AQMD cited GKN for operating beyond permitted chemical limits, exceeding legal emissions thresholds, failing to maintain required records, and failing to obtain permits for certain equipment. GKN paid a $909,935 fine for those violations in early 2025, just months before this incident. Public OSHA records also show prior citations at the Garden Grove facility. The Orange County District Attorney has opened a formal investigation into the company’s conduct.

How long do I have to file a claim in California?

In California, the statute of limitations for filing a personal injury claim is generally two years from the date of the incident and 3 years for property damage. However, waiting can cause key pieces of evidence to be lost. Contact The Dominguez Firm as soon as possible to protect your rights.

What does it cost to hire The Dominguez Firm? Nothing upfront. The Dominguez Firm handles toxic exposure cases on a contingency fee basis, meaning you pay no attorney fees unless we recover compensation for you. Your initial consultation is free and confidential.

What should I do right now if I was affected?

  • Document everything.
  • Write down when and where you experienced odors, symptoms, or disruption.
  • Save all receipts related to evacuation expenses.
  • Seek medical attention if you have symptoms.
  • Do not speak to GKN Aerospace or their insurers.
