Father’s Day

Father’s Day

Parenthood can be immensely rewarding and, at times, downright exhausting. So celebrations like Father’s Day are a nice time in which we can stop, take stock, and remember the role fathers play in our lives. We at The Dominguez Firm are proud to commemorate Father’s Day this year on June 21st and hope you join us in wishing every father and grandfather reading this a wonderful day of relaxation. fathers day

Father’s Day in the United States

Father’s Day was originally developed in the United States as a complement to Mother’s Day, which was officially recognized in the early 20th century. Sonora Dodd, who worked in a Spokane, Washington YMCA in 1910 held the first Father’s Day celebration. Her own father, who had fought in the Civil War and raised six children alone, was an inspiration for what would eventually become a day to celebrate the role men play in raising children.

It took decades for Father’s Day to gain ground as a true holiday, often mocked and derided by popular media for being a commercial grab and spin-off of Mother’s Day. In 1972, however, Father’s Day was officially made a holiday by Richard Nixon, and today it is celebrated by millions of families around the globe.

How We Celebrate Father’s Day

Father’s Day is not as widely celebrated as Mother’s Day, but it still has a large audience and near global recognition. We celebrate in much the same way, buying cards and small gifts for the fathers, uncles and grandfathers in our lives, and there are plenty of events around Los Angeles to make the day extra special.

Some recommendations include:

  • Cruisin’ Brea Oldies Car Show – The Orange County Mustang Club holds their annual Oldies Car show on Father’s Day this year, with old cars, music and food from 10am-3pm.
  • 35th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival – At the Hollywood Bowl, the 35th annual Jazz Festival is being MC’d by George Lopez and will have a range of artists including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Taj Mahal, and Real Thing Tuba Band.
  • Train 4 Autism Run – If dad is a fitness fanatic, consider taking him to the Train 4 Autism Culver City 5K/10K run in Media Park. The event starts at 8am and has a number of fun family activities.
  • Father’s Day Brunch – Restaurants throughout Los Angeles will be holding special Father’s Day Brunches all day Sunday, but make your reservations in advance. They fill up fast.

Whatever the father in your life wants to do this Father’s Day, rest assured knowing that there is something for him in Los Angeles. And we at The Dominguez Firm would like to wish him and any other father reading this a Happy Father’s Day.
